Making a Cacao Elixir

As you begin the alchemy of making your Cacao Elixir, I invite you to take a moment to breathe and tune into your body and heart. Perhaps you hold an intention for this cacao experience. What might your body need today? Perhaps you have a prayer, something you’d like support with, or something you’d love to amplify in yourself. Notice the connection between your breath and your heart, your feet and the earth.

For one serving of cacao, add 1 oz of Cacao Paste to a small pot with 3 ounces of water. Heat, but do not boil the cacao. This will ensure that all the medicinal properties of the cacao will stay intact.

Stir and add any desired spices, flowers, milks and sweeteners (I recommend 1 tbsp of raw honey to sweeten). As you stir your ingredients continue to notice what sensations and feelings may be invoked within your own body. If you feel called, you may want to share songs, poems or other blessings as you mix your elixir. The making of every elixir is an opportunity to get creative, to play and to connect with the elements.

Stir well and perhaps even blend your elixir to create more froth and bubbles. The rainbow bubbles are considered sacred in many indigenous traditions because they represent to union between earth and sky, spirit and body.

I invite you to take a moment to receive the aromatics of the Cacao.

Sip and Savor.

Cacao may inspire you to deepen into your own creativity. As you enjoy your elixir feel free to move your body however is needed, make art, sing, connect with nature, make love etc…explore whatever is going to be loving and nourishing for you today. Enjoy!

Necuhtli Cacao

Necuhtli Cacao was inspired by over decade of on and off travel to Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Mexico, Bali and Hawaii, where the magic and medicine of Cacao supported my personal healing and embodiment journey. I was so inspired by other cacao mamas and elders throughout my travels who taught me how to handcraft this sacred medicine in indigenous traditional ways. I was supported by these practices and by the cacao itself, to deepen relationship with my own body as a source of love, and as a reflection of the earth. After the pandemic hit in 2020, everything that distracted me from my passion of cacao alchemy fell away, and what emerged was the opportunity to focus on deep listening to the earth through my connection with cacao as a teacher of embodied love. I devoted myself to being a steward of this medicine with as much integrity as possible. This meant ensuring that indigenous families who have preserved these traditions of growing and tending to the cacao were supported. I also wanted to ensure that I find the most impeccable quality of cacao that I could possibly find. My prayers were answered as I connected with some dear friends named Mateo and Wasi, who own Prophecy Chocolate, who support me in sourcing the most delicious cacaos from these impeccable small family farms in Peru. It is such an honor to collaborate with all of these beautiful humans, to be a keeper of this medicine, and to continue the tradition of my own ancestors of bridging cacao through ancient trade routs to Northern New Mexico. I continue to handcraft cacao, bean to bar, here in my own home lands of O’ga P’ogeh, also known as Santa Fe, New Mexico. I chose the word Necuhtli, which is a Nahuatl word, meaning Nectar. Nahuatl is the language of a diverse Mexica culture of indigenous people, representing some of my own personal ancestry. I was inspired to use this word to celebrate the sweet nectar of life and highlight the very special local raw honey that I use in many of my offerings.

Cacao is widely known as the medicine of love. In many cultures around the world, cacao is a plant ally who is respected and celebrated as a feminine essence of Earth who’s gifts and medicines support the unity of diverse cultures of people. This medicine inspires a connection to the heart, healing of the body, and a deepening relationship with the Earth. It is my intention with Necuhtli Cacao to bring you the best quality of cacao I can find. This Cacao has been tended to with love and respect from the beginning of its life cycle as a small seed planted into the soil. This Cacao is organically grown by families and small coops in the sacred valley of Peru, sourced through my wonderful friends Matteo and Wasi, and roasted and processed my me, Maya Rose, in the Necuhtli Apothecary Kitchen. It is such an honor to share this beautiful cacao medicine with you. Thank you for being here and for supporting this offering.

With love and blessings,

Maya Rose & Necuhtli Cacao
